I've played for the first time today: 07/23/2022 and I'm doing great. Do you know why? It's the secret to playing any old school game: I read the manual. One does not simply play a game like this without reading the manual, it's like target shooting with a blindfold. There are no in-game tutorials or much explanation of game mechanics, it's all in the manual as was common with most games back then.

You need to be on literally anything higher than ground level, chairs, tables, beds, ledges, barrels, etc, to prevent enemies from spawning when you rest, or at least it lowers the chance, if you had rested on the raised ledge in front of you, you would have had a much better chance of being able to fully rest
