Intro
This tutorial aims at covering all aspects of the game—weapons, tactics, enemies, tricks. It is primarly addressed to Newcomers, who have logged a few hours into the game, but even veteran players might find a new trick or two. In order to keep it simple there is just a list of things you need to know, without going much into detail. If you want more info you should be able to find it on your own knowing what to search for. I also provide links for further reading at the end of this guide.

Enjoy.
General
  • Always stick together. Always watch your back. Never rush alone, even when it seems safe.
  • Block and push works 360°. Block a lot.
  • You can block while reviving team mates. Simply block before starting revive.
  • Remember to dodge.
  • Keep rats staggered by pushing and hitting.
  • Listen to audio cues (rats spawning, specials).
  • Mark specials and items (default T).
  • Activate player outlines "always on" in the settings.
  • Consider increasing FOV as it gives you better situational awareness.
  • Your maximum health is 150 except for Cataclysm, where it is 100 HP.
  • Don't jump in lowering lifts, you will take lots of damage.
  • Pressing against an inclined wall prevents falling damage. Tiny edges will do as well.
  • On-hit or on-kill procs also work on pigs.
  • Ranged weapons and grenades deal friendly fire in Nightmare and Cataclysm. However most of the weapons deal negligible damage (2) and FF can be mostly ignored (by both parties involved). Nevertheless, be cautious with some staves, hagbane, grenades and—of course—strength potions.
  • You can start controlling your character when the level starts by entering the chat and pressing escape.
  • You can switch between private and public game in the player status screen (default TAB).
Weapons
  • Longer charge does not increase the damage of the charged attack of melee weapons.
  • Some ranged weapons benefit from charging (e.g. staves).
  • Holding RMB will block attacks. If you have stamina left, you will not take damage. Blocking only costs stamina if an attack is parried.
  • Clicking LMB while blocking pushes enemies back, staggering them. Costs stamina.
  • There is a short window between blocking and pushing where you can be hit.
  • Most melee weapons have combos.
  • Each swing in a combo deals different damage.
  • Each swing in a combo hits a different amount of targets.
  • Blocking will cancel the combo, which makes often sense because you might deal more damage/hit more rats that way. Also allows to avoid the cool-down at the end of the combo.
  • Manually reloading is usually quicker than the automatic reload after the magazine has emptied.
  • All weapons deal different damage to different target types (normal, armored, resistant, friendly fire).
  • You should be familiar with the different damage numbers and damage patterns in order to know which attack to use, when to cancel etc. All numbers can be found here:
    Weapons Damage Patterns[docs.google.com]
  • Rapier's off-hand pistol can be used with the weapon special button.
  • You can zoom in with the Trueflight bow by pressing the weapon special button.
Enemies
  • Normal enemies are: Slave rats, Clan rats, Globadiers, Gutter runners, Sack rats.
  • Armored enemies are: Stormvermin, Ratling gunners.
  • Resistant enemies are: Packmasters, Ogres.
  • Armor does not reduce damage per se, but weapons use a different damage profile against them. Some weapons deal no damage to armored enemies (have no "Armor penetration" in the weapon stats).
  • Resistant enemies cannot have armor. As a result, all weapons deal damage to resistant enemies.
  • When a gutter runner attacks a team mate, push it off first rather than just hitting it.
  • Pushing a gutter runner prevents him from teleporting.
  • Gutter runners and Packmasters can be dodged sideways.
  • Packmasters cannot be pushed.
  • Pushing a Stormvermin off a cliff can be an efficient way to deal with them.
  • Stormvermin patrols can and should be avoided.
  • Ogres overhead slam cannot be blocked (only dodged), his swing however can. As with any other attack, blocking results in no damage taken.
  • When an ogre spawns, kill specials and trash rats first, and ignore the ogre. Meanwhile, the person having aggro should kite the ogre. Also a downed team mate should have priority over dealing damage to the ogre.
Items
  • Medical supplies heal 90% of your missing health. They can used on team mates by holding RMB.
  • Healing draughts heal 75 health points. You can pass them to team mates by using the action key (default E).
  • Healing resets the bleed-out state (grey health).
  • Rather than healing when you are at little health wait until you get downed, then heal after being revived. You will end up with more health.
  • The heal share trinket also resets bleed-out for your team mates.
  • Rather than leaving healing items behind you might as well use them.
  • Speed potions stack.
  • Strength potions do not stack.
  • The effects of stregth potions are:
    x3 damage against normal targets,
Deal normal damage against armored targets,
    x2 damage against resistant targets,
Friendly fire will deal x3 normal (!) damage.
  • Like Healing draughts, you can pass potions with the action key (default E).
  • Grenades throws can be cancelled by right clicking.
  • Fire grenades deal fire DoT even if you cant see flames.
  • Improved versions of both grenade types actually deal the same amount of damage.
  • Cursed dice are randomly spawned in chests, wearing the luck trinket increases the chance of finding them (for the wearer only).
  • Tomes occupy the healing item slot. You can swap them for healing items.
  • Grimoires occupy the potion slot and reduce the health of all heroes by 33%. You cannot swap them but destroy them by equipping it and clicking LMB. Should be carried by players with the best survivability in the party.
Red Moon Inn
  • Instead of relying on the automatic matchmaking you can use the lobby browser to find games.
  • If you can't find any games, make sure you are not playing the beta branch.
  • Inventory, Forge and Shrine have hotkeys, no need to walk to them.
  • Bots will use the weapons and trinkets you have equipped for that character.
  • Trinkets can be equipped on multiple characters.
  • When fusing weapons in the forge, you will get the same weapon type of one of the weapons you fused. Using weapons of one type will hence guarantee that specific weapon.
  • You can also fuse less than five weapons, and pay for empty slots with gems. This decreases the pool of weapon types from which the higher tier weapon is picked.
  • When you drag an item on the bucket in order to salvage it, there is no way to cancel. If however you click on the bucket, you can simply salavage any item by clicking on it. This second method allows to cancel by clicking again (LMB or RMB), as long as the animation is in progress.

There's an even faster way to deal with Stormvermin. It's called "Hammer."

Although, I always prefer to call it the "Sit-the-fuck-down Stick."
